Potential for seasonal flood forecasting in West Africa using climate indexes

چکیده

Floods are among the most devastating natural disasters and expected to become more severe with changing climate population growth. Flood forecasting is one of key components flood risk reduction. The potential for seasonal through indexes has not been studied West Africa so far. This work investigates how indicators can be used predict in advance, several months ahead season, above or below normal discharge Africa. Six global regional were screened their 56 river gauging stations across Forecasting models developed, based on simple multiple linear regressions between annual maximum discharge, evaluated using relative operating characteristics levels scores. western dipole mode index skillful individual prediction. Combining via outperforms both show skills up 4 prior season. Hence, this study opens promising possibilities may help alert disaster reduction agencies entering a period an increased chance flooding trigger adequate mitigation measures.

Ocean–Atmosphere Basis for Seasonal Climate Forecasting

Paul S. Schopf George Mason University There are many phenomena of interest in the atmosphere and ocean, only some of which are relevant for seasonal forecasting. One way of identifying the processes likely to be active is through scale analysis which identifies the important terms in the governing equations and highlights the importance of geostrophic balance. Simple arguments for Rossby waves...

Macroeconomic Forecasting Using Diffusion Indexes

This article studies forecasting a macroeconomic time series variable using a large number of predictors. The predictors are summarized using a small number of indexes constructed by principal component analysis. An approximate dynamic factor model serves as the statistical framework for the estimation of the indexes and construction of the forecasts. The method is used to construct 6-, 12-, an...

Seasonal Climate Effects Anemotaxis in Newly Emerged Adult Anopheles gambiae Giles in Mali, West Africa

The direction and magnitude of movement by the malaria vector Anopheles gambiae Giles has been of great interest to medical entomologists for over 70 years. This direction of movement is likely to be affected by many factors, from environmental conditions and stage of life history of the mosquito to the existence of attractants in the vicinity. We report here the direction of movement of newly ...

Flood Forecasting Using Neural Networks

This paper deals with flood routing in rivers using neural networks. The unsteady river flow may be formulated in terms of two one-dimensional partial differential equations. These are the Saint Venant flow continuity and dynamic equations. Several methods of solution of these equations are known. These methods are based upon characteristics of equations, finite difference, finite element and f...

Data Integration for Climate Vulnerability Mapping in West Africa

Vulnerability mapping reveals areas that are likely to be at greater risk of climate-related disasters in the future. Through integration of climate, biophysical, and socioeconomic data in an overall vulnerability framework, so-called “hotspots” of vulnerability can be identified. These maps can be used as an aid to targeting adaptation and disaster risk management interventions. This paper rev...
